O replică din serialul Dallas ne spune că „banii nu aduc fericirea, dar numai noi, bogaţii, o ştim”. Totuşi, dacă ne gândim la povestea lui Oskar Schindler, lucrurile stau invers: „Banii aduc fericirea, dar numai noi, bogaţii, o ştim”.
Oskar Schindler a salvat vieţi în timp ce făcea afaceri, iar povestea lui ne „salvează” şi pe noi astăzi atunci când ne temem de mulţimea de zero-uri la care am ajuns: ea ne spune că banii nu trebuie daţi, ci folosiţi. E prea uşor să dai banii, e ca şi cum ai intra în mânăstire doar pentru că ţi-e frică de lumea din jur.
De fapt, în „mânăstire” intră cei care păstrează banii. Dar păstrează şi întrebarea cea mai grea, uneori mai dureroasă chiar decât sărăcia: poate că, prin funcţia la care am ajuns, mai puteam ajuta pe cineva? Măcar cu o recomandare sau cu o informaţie bună? I could have saved one more person, and I didn’t... ?
